Can I Wear Contact Lenses at My Wedding?

I got married this spring. The big event got me thinking about the importance of eyewear for The Big Day. As a seasoned contact lens wearer myself, I was already expecting to wear my contacts instead of glasses. But for many of our patients, this is not the case. It is really important to give some good thought and consideration to your eyewear for this important day ahead of time so you will be prepared. If you’ve never worn contacts before, fear not! I’m going to give you some of my best advice for first-time wearers so you can be prepared!

What are the Benefits?

There are lots of benefits to wearing contact lenses instead of glasses. Here are two of my favorite reasons to wear contacts for your wedding:

1. Less glare in photographs (and, trust me, there will be LOTS of photos!)

2. Improved peripheral vision so you can really take it all in!

Advice from the Doctor

To help you be prepared for the big day, I am including a few pieces of advice below:

1. DON’T do this at the last minute! Typically, a proper contact lens fitting includes at LEAST two visits to your eye doctor. The first will include a diagnostic pair of lenses being inserted into your eyes by the doctor. Then, you will need an insertion and removal lesson so that you’re able to handle inserting and removing the contacts by yourself. Next, you trial these diagnostic lenses for about one week or so at home. You will then return to the doctor’s office for a follow up visit to confirm the proper fit, ensure the lenses were comfortable, and to finalize the prescription. More complicated prescriptions will require more than one follow up.

2. It’s a long, fantastic day – so be PREPARED! Remember, this is going to be one of the best days of your life so you want to enjoy every moment. In order to be most comfortable, your eye doctor will prescribe a healthy brand of contacts that will lubricate your eyes from morning until night minimizing dryness, irritation, and other complications. However, you’ll still want to bring a back up pair and lubricating drops just in case.

3. For patients who require bifocals or progressive glasses, MULTIFOCAL contacts may be best for you enabling you to see near, far, and in between (think ceremony to centerpiece). Some contacts provide a reading prescription for patients who require bifocals or progressive glasses. These contacts are called ‘Multifocals’. So, rejoice! Even the over 40 crowd can be FREE of glasses at the wedding too!

4. If you wouldn’t feel like yourself WITHOUT YOUR GLASSES, then wear them! There is nothing wrong with wearing glasses on your big day. Just remember, the best quality lenses with anti-glare technology will provide the best vision and will help reduce glare in photographs. It is worthwhile to invest in a new frame so you will look and feel your best, and new lenses so your eyewear will be scratch-free!

Be Aware!

Take caution when applying makeup. I suggest you insert the contacts BEFORE applying makeup. Since this will be a new process, you may want to consult with your makeup artist during a trial period to make sure everything goes just right on the Wedding day.

Contacts are medical devices and should be treated as such. You should only wear the exact contact lenses prescribed for you. To ensure the lenses fit you properly, schedule an exam with a licensed optometrist.
