In today’s world, we are surrounded by computers and smart devices everywhere we turn. Most of us utilize these devices on a daily basis. Some of us use them in excess, whether for work, study, or when playing games. So, how can we protect our eyes from the digital world?
One importance piece of advice is to take visual breaks. I tell my patients to look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. This means: remember to look far away (down a hallway, out a window) every so often for only a few seconds at a time. This is a small change that can make a big difference. It helps to prevent the eyes from over-focusing and becoming strained.
For children, it is imperative to limit the amount of time allowed on tablets and smart devices each day. Evidence has shown that children who spend more time playing outdoors are less likely to become nearsighted. Encourage your children to play outside, especially now while the weather is nice!
For adults and kids alike, I prescribe BluTech lenses to protect my patient’s eyes. These lenses absorb most of the blue light that is emitted from our smart devices, computers, and flat screen televisions. This was it prevents the blue light from entering the eyes.
